fridays at Tonic in New York

The Polar Bear Club was founded by Mike Wolf and Timeblind and happened every friday from 2000-2004. For three years we served up brilliant nights of sound with some brilliant guests, experimental video, and a damned fine bartender. Guest DJs and live acts ranged from Matmos or Anti-Pop Consortium to Norwegian midi-death metal. Some nights were packed and ecstatic and made me feel truly good about the power of music. Some nights were slow and we grumbled about the world not being right. But the music was still good.

The Bunker was founded by Timeblind as the successor to the Polar Bear Club. DJ Spinoza took over from Mike Wolf.

Its a big genre-clash of sound, deep stuff, some wild dance parties, some chin stroking, some drinking. dub, banging techno, uk garage, hip hop, dancehall, glitched up, mashedup, throbbing things, ecstatic jazz, live instruments, solo electronic heavy metal, shameless house party. that's what we've been up to.

Timeblind has now moved to Berlin and Klever Vice and Movement joined the crew. Its become quite the hotspot for NYC Techno with Dan Bell and Sammy Dee (Perlon) making regular appearances and great guests like Plasticman (the grime one) and Suburban Knight (Underground Resistance). And occasionally Norwegian midi-death metal.

Baby Shotta : Movado with Ward 21 on the Nookie 2k6 riddim. This thing runs through my head every day. Movado - Ward 21 - Baby Shottas You can even buy it on iTunes Movado with the gorgeous drifting song, Ward 21's Suku—the bass dude. Good cop bad cop. Ward 21 always play their voice talent like an orchestra. Suku is the one that intones hypnotically on that single deadly pitch. Suku also produces many of my favorite Ward 21 ...

    • grime: love/hate

On the street, cell phones enable impromptu rapping, or "spitting," over music played through speaker phones. Grime is hated and loved. Its basically a super media thing, attractive to people who write about stuff. All these "new" genres are like that (Favela funk, Reggaeton). Music is hard to talk about, and music writers ALWAYS bore me. They stick to the surface attributes. No way to know if something really is good or not based on these descriptions. If I listen ...

    • soundclash: nietzsche vs. buddha

Many of the innovations in music for the past several decades happen in the more agressive, energetically active forms. Metal, punk, hip-hop, techno, jungle (hardcore), dancehall/bashment, grime. Nietzsche would be proud: the strong succeed, leading the way. The Appollonians may complain, back in their chill out rooms or up in their pop charts, but they follow the leader. Further down the line they sweeten the style up once its cooled off. War presidents think this way too. Apollonian nations fall ...

    • when it happens

In case you all hadn't noticed, the world is falling apart. I posted here back on September 11th, 2007 that the finance world was going to fall apart. http://crucial-systems.com/For_those_of_you_that_dont_pay_attention_to_the_world_of_finance The reason I fled New York was that I could see quite clearly that the wheels were going to come off that wagon and the US may very well collapse into chaos. Alarmist, yes. That's what alarms are for. The solid truth is that the financial markets always precede the real ...

    • I am legend

For some reason all the cool people are hating on the new Will Smith vehicle. People who haven't even seen it declare that they don't like it. I liked it. So there. As a former New Yorker its awesome to see New York totally devoid of people. I'm not quite sure where the lions come from. Any movie that features the near total extinction of mankind is usually somewhat enjoyable. You get to see Will scrunch his face up and ...

Solar Life Raft Ingredients

Timeblind
Format: Digital
Release date: 4th January 2010
Available at
  • coltan and cassiterite Timeblind

The unmixed ingredients from Rupture and Shadetek’s Solar Life Raft. Including two tracks by me: Coltan and Cassiterite and Space Cadet (which came out on last year’s 12” on Version)

I’ve been waiting/yearning for Coltan and Cassiterite to come out for much of last year. I was about to release it myself just to relieve my own tension waiting for it. Anyway, its on a good home: The Agriculture and the reviews have been great so far.

The title refers to two of the minerals that are mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo and are components in portable electronics like cel phones. Its one of the unfortunate driving forces behind continuing warfare among the militias in the Rwanda/DRC border area.
