I will try to bring my students from the Danish Royal Academy of Music along. – But anyway – – I will present a book – – It’s a schoolbook – – It’s new – – It might be a bit radical – – It’s an alternative and I hope it’s good, but even if it’s not, at least it’s an alternative – – Everyone who attends the class will become a co-composer of my piece Mort Aux Vaches Ekstra Extra – – And – – Everyone who attends the class can, of course, take his or her new composition home – More information about my current work can be found here http://blog.wfmu.org/freeform/2008/ 01/goodiepal-and-t.html.
cost of gas in germany : $7.71 per gallon

Gas (95) is at a national average of €1,397 per litre which comes to about US-$7.71 per US-gallon with current exchange rates.

$8.80 in Holland

1 US gallon = 3.7854118 litres
exchange rate today is (yuck) 1.49

I only ride my bike. I don't even take the U-bahn that much.

Currency analysts predict a pullback of the EUR vs. USD to 1.45. It has been hitting 1.45 here and there, but right now its rising again. 1.51 is said to be "unsustainable".

That's my rent going up and my US earnings going down.

Berlin vs. New York Round IV

Berlin vs. New York Round IV

October 4, 2007, 8:39 am

Why do people live in New York ? There is no relationship between them. Except for an inner electricity which results from the simple fact of their being crowded together. A magical sensation of contiguity and attraction for an artificial centrality. This is what makes it a self-attracting universe, which there is no reason to leave. There is no human reason to be here, except for the sheer ecstasy of being crowded together.

Jean Baudrillard, America 1989

I moved back to Berlin.

I don't know what it is about New York, but it drives me slowly insane. My visits back there over the years have been enjoyable and I figured I should go there to find some new destiny. After 9 months I get worn down by the arrogance and the noise and especially the high rents and food prices. Worn down by always chasing money to fill somebody else's pocket.

Most everybody in New York is trying to get somewhere. That's the point of The City : you go there to make it. So if you aren't Donald Trump, you still haven't made it and you still have to hustle. Everybody is hustling all the time. It rubs off on everyone. I figured it would do me good to get back in the game, but as soon as I got there I didn't feel like playing.

It has to be said that New York and Los Angeles are at the center of the world, even if we find the idea both exciting and disenchanting. We (Europeans) are a desperately long way behind the stupidity and the mutational character, the naive extravagence and the social, racial, moral, morphological, and architectural excentricity of their society. - JB, America

He also says that the Europeans will always be Bourgeoisie. Damned straight, that's why the pastries are so much better here. America is advanced like Derivitaves. Their moral value system is also strangely abstracted in the same way. Perhaps Bush believes that his account will eventually show a Moral Profit if we would only give him a little time, yes the moral hedge fund is down at the moment but ...

I'm back in my old apartment in Berlin now, right off of the canal with the street market and the swans. As soon as I got here I felt more relaxed than I have in months. My ears have finally stopped ringing (somebody needs to take a big bottle of WD-40 to the subway in Union Square) and my meditation feels like I'm making progress again rather than just attempting to keep myself out of the loony bin. I distinctly feel like I'm home.

We just got phone call with our sister living in Yangon about a few
hours ago. We saw on BBC world, saying that 200 monks were arrested.
The true picture is far worse. For one instance, the monastery at an
obscure neighborhood of Yangon, called Ngwe Kyar Yan (on
Wei-za-yan-tar Road, Yangon) had been raided early this morning.

A troop of lone-tein (riot police comprised of paid thugs) protected
by the military trucks, raided the monastery with 200 studying monks.
They systematically ordered all the monks to line up and banged and
crushed each one's head against the brick wall of the monastery. One
by one, the peaceful, non resisting monks, fell to the ground,
screaming in pain. Then, they tore off the red robes and threw them
all in the military trucks (like rice bags) and took the bodies away.

The head monk of the monastery, was tied up in the middle of the
monastery, tortured , bludgeoned, and later died the same day, today.
Tens of thousands of people gathered outside the monastery, warded off
by troops with bayoneted rifles, unable to help their helpless monks
being slaughtered inside the monastery. Their every try to forge ahead
was met with the bayonets.

When all is done, only 10 out of 200 remained alive, hiding in the
monastery. Blood stained everywhere on the walls and floors of the
monastery.

Please tell your audience of the full extent of the fate of the monks
please please !!!!!!!!!!!!
'Arrested' is not enough expression. They have been bludgeoned to death !!!!!!
Not that I think a protest outside the embassy would be very effective. Its not like the miliatry junta particularily cares about their international image.

update: I changed my mind. The protests are to show the UN and western govt's how concerned we are. It causes them to take more action against Myanmar. Even China is postively affected by worldwide opinion. I think China is actually very nervous about it re the Olympics.

Update: they have killed THOUSANDS of monks and dumped the bodies in the jungle.

Berlin vs. New York II

Berlin vs. New York II

February 14, 2007, 12:27 am

New York is annoying. Besides the snow, the freezing cold, $1000+ rents, $9 glasses of beer and miserable cell phone coverage, the people are all crazy, constantly defending themselves against the emotional invasion of the city. And by "the city" of course we mean all those other people. People pick up emotional bruises and then bump it onto the next passerby.

There are lots of really sweet people here. I'm enjoying the friends I do hang out with, though we don't hang out enough. Everybody is crazy busy.

In this city, its usually the ambitious ones that are the most annoying, especially the ones that have only been here a few years and haven't figured out how to play it smooth with their small town dreams. Denmark was recently declared one of the most content countries in the world, mainly due to a lack of ambition. Desire leads to suffering. Simple equation. New York is sickly with desire.

Berlin is a couple of little villages surrounded by a lot of vaguely occupied suburbs. Most of the city seems to have moved there from somewhere else, so for them they are in the big city. There is a lot of space, a lot of distance and relatively little interaction.

German formality adds yet more space, even in casual Berlin. A friend of mine at the über-hip software firm Ableton complained to me about some German guy who had called him up and started off way too friendly, using the informal Du and acting like they were already friends. "So ... American ! yuck."

In New York people you barely know will start off warm and informal, give you their card and say "hey we should work together, let's make music, I know some people..." and they probably won't call you but the warmth and immediacy seems nice to me now.

In Berlin nobody ever every offered to do anything with me. They wait years until you are part of the family; they work with people they already know even if the work is inferior. This isn't a bad thing, it builds more solid friendships. Americans seem superficial and all about the market, and they speak with forked tongues.

At a lazy sunday BBQ in a Prezlauer park I met an architect. He didn't make buildings of course (few do): he wrote books and discussed theory. He explained that after living through the rush of '89 when the air was filled with such mind-blowing promises of a new world, life was now just easy-going and people were just happy to "live outside the mainstream". Everyone who lived through the aftermath of the fall of the wall knows that that was the peak.

But he didn't seem too productive. I started to miss the energizing force of the big city, in the motivation that competition brings. Oh fashion and real estate, advertising, making images, making culture, hip hop, dancehall, TV and film ! Only the fierce fires of the marketplace can generate that, with all its attendant evils. I'm gonna step up my game.

So I'm here in New York now and I find myself listening to old dissonant jazz, wolf eyes, sonic youth, my bloody valentine, bob dylan. Interested in texture, messy paintings and old new york mystics. I'm certainly not a business guy.

Marketplaces tend towards immorality. This includes art markets and music scenes. If money or fame or audience numbers are "how we keep track" then morality as a value system disappears. Art gets made in order to make those numbers; clockin' Gs, cash & ho's, attendance numbers, YouTube view counts.

You have to find your own way to rate things. How many shivers down the spine does this record give you ? Did it change the game, cut deeper ? Did this one make time stop or make you physically remember your love or your pain ?
