Happy As Hell
Chris Sattinger [Timeblind] back in 94. Happy as Hell was mostly frenetic very fucked up hardcore, but with just enough of a sensitive Butthole Surfers art-type thing going on so that no-one in hardcore would actually spin it. Bass lines with the 909 toms, scorched strings, sped up breaks—basically it was 'ardcore jungle if you lived in the midwest and didn't care for the too-ravey UK stuff. An accidental trance type mix came out on Instinct's Trancefusion compilation which sold 16,000 copies, and a distorted funk 909 track (collaborated with Kevin Cole) came out on midwest label Audiocon.

Sold 16,000 copies-- one of the best-selling US techno compilations of the era. Trance was actually still an adjective then, not yet a proper genre. Or maybe I was just clueless back in Minneapolis. We were listening to hardcore. Trance quickly became a genre title. It still denoted some kind of primitive tribal mentality, or at least to me. It was different than disco-- you were in a trance. Somehow spiritual, like voodoo. Then they sent me this CD and I thought "what's with all the f*&ing synth pads?" Thus was trance born.
