Buying UK dubstep and grime MP3s
2 July 2007
Those of us who are into dubstep and grime have a really hard time buying it on mp3. Those scenes tend to fetishisize exclusivity and small runs of vinyl. And then they wonder why they aren't selling outside of the UK. What happens is that people rip the vinyl right away and bit torrent it.
I ACTUALLY PREFER to shop at an online store (versus P2P) because you can listen, fill your basket, remove things, read up, explore catalogs, discover artists. I like it way better than being a real store too.
Come on UK labels, get with it. We would rather you got a quid instead of your bloody postal service getting 6 (not too mention your overpriced pressing plant, distributor and UK taxes getting the other 6). Oh, and stop putting out 1 sided records. That's just rude, boys.
I need that 4x4 and bassline garage. Impossible to find outside of the UK. Recently announced, not yet open for business.
I love shopping at beatport for techno. Great to wander through labels and artist catalogs and find things I missed from years back. They have litte to no real grime or dubstep. Their player does have an odd bass enhancer on it. Its just like being in a DJ shop where they slip an aural exciter and eq in there to get you hyped up. Sounds different when you get it home.
Sorry, but the interface really spoils this. I never end up staying very long. But good selection, and many minimal techno labels are only on kompakt.
Some dubstep, but a lot of principal labels are not represented here.
I like the bloggable embed :
Yay ! We love boomkat are were happy to hear they were opening up for downloads. A really well built site too. But they are far too cool to stock cheesy 4x4 garage, not even Dexplicit. In a sign of the times Boomkat are now offering Basic Channel MP3. Basic Channel are legendary analog Gods (2 inch tape) who grudgingly released CD versions after many years.
