Berlin: me, beer, dogs, techno and now Michael Jackson

So did I mention that I moved to Berlin ? Not really; I've just blogged here and there about cosmic stuff and politics. The big picture stuff. I don't like to blog about my small life, its a bit invasive for me. I do like to read other people's blogs, and I pick up good info about life that way.

Well I moved to Berlin which is a fantastic city. Its very peaceful and green. There's graffiti on everything, cafés and bars every 10 meters along the streets and rivers. Half the economy seems to involve drinking beer. The beer is damned cheap; the rent is really cheap. Lots of us ex-New Yorkers come here for precisely that thrill.

It is heaven for dogs. They are the most well behaved dogs in the world. When the human goes inside a shop, the dog waits patiently outside without a leash. They can come on trains, into bars. When one dog gets angry and barks the other ones all stare at him. You can get a stipend for keeping a dog, so all them on the dole get dogs.

The parties here are many times the intensity of New York. That's basically Europe--people just aren't weirdly inhibited about dancing and drinking. It certainly centers on techno, but there's many other things happening here. We're getting a reputation in London now that the Grime guys have been coming over here to play. Everybody seems to be a musician. Berlin can be a bit of a trap-- you get used to living cheaply and having fun all the time and then you can't escape. New York is a trap because you can't afford to leave and you can't afford to stay unless you work constantly. There is of course a lot more money to be made in NYC. Except in music where there is far more money in Europe.

Everybody moves here. Richie Hawtin (who tried New York for a couple of years) is here with entourage. A Guy Called Gerald (also tried New York). I keep joking that Michael Jackson will move here.... and then today :

"Michael has toured the world for 30 years. In Germany during the trial, he was never stabbed in the back here. Out of our country came the strongest support," so Andrews continued "Why he fell in love with Berlin, Michael can't describe. But you know yourself how awesome the city is."
