  • Melatonin

    Label:

    Room40

    Run by Lawrence English (Australia)

    Format: 2xCD compilation
    Released: April 30,2004
    Meditations on sound in sleep

feat. Chris Watson, Stephen Vitiello, Ai Yamamoto, Oren Ambarachi, DJ Olive, Lawrence English, Pimmon, Marina Rosenfeld, Skist, Timeblind, DJ /Rupture, John Chantler, Scanner, Zane Trow, David Toop, Steinbrüchel, Philip Samartzis, Lloyd Barrett, Joe Musgrove, Scott Sincclair, Martin Ng, Tetuzi Akiyama, Frost, Gail Priest, Tim Koch, Janek Schaefer

During sleep, a process controlled in part by the body's use of the chemical melatonin, our brain functions in a markedly different fashion to our waking life.

As an example, reading is noted by many sleep researchers to be a quite unusual process, whereby words simply fall off the page, their graphical meaning abstracted as various sections of the brain recline into states of rest.

Something similar is true for sounds we hear generated within dreams, the way in which incidental atmospheres complement, interrupt or interfere with our sleep suggests a new set of understandings. It is these concepts that are explored here in a deeply personal and reflective manner.

    Lawrence English Jan 2004

The opening of the installation went off fantastically well at the Next Wave festival in chilly Melbourne town. The works were installed in Bus Gallery—an artist run space in the heart of the city and the exhibition was visited by over 500 people who each enjoyed a lay down and some respite from the constant flood of activity during the festival. There's a review from Simon Sellers below....

The Melatonin installation is also showing as part of a sound exhibition I'll be curating at MAAP in Singapore this october and november. The works will be installed along an 80 metre pedestrian tunnel located on Singapore's Esplanade district. The pieces will be displayed to over 15000 people a day as they walk through the tunnel!! The exhibition also features works from Toshiya Tsunoda, Kuchil Kim and Candy factory to name a few...

  • Team Shadetek WSHT radio mix

    Label:

    Violent Turd

new zealand label run by kid606

    Format: Mix CD
    Released: October 31,2003
    Tracks:
    1. Doubt
The first publicly available mixtape from SHADETEk label operators Soze and Zats1 WSHT: Radio Mix catalogs the rotation sheet for WSHT, an imaginary radio station with an outernational footprint. Originating in Team SHADETEk's own SHTBox studios on Manhattan Island and being relayed via New Zealand WSHT is BLAZING Hiphop, Noise and R+B although due to sketchy broadcasting techniques lord knows what else might seep through the cracks. The tracks chosen for heavy rotation at WSHT, unlike other competing Manhattan based radio stations, are not chosen by fat briefcases of cash. Instead they reflect a selection of musics from like-minded spirits distributed throughout different geographic time-zones and eras selected with an ear towards illustrating links between artists who didn't know that they were connected. There are also a number of exclusive original SHADETEk productions as well as tunes from SHT affiliates which you will have a very difficult time finding anywhere else.

  • Most Eye - The Rastabomba Remixes

    Label:

    Orthlorng Musork

Josh Kit Clayton and Sue's orphanage for odd earthling's music. This started as a small label with good intentions—to put out unique and really good music that everyone else considered too different—so a bunch of us gave them good music to put out. Then it got bigger than they expected, and Sue found she couldn't really do the label and the artists justice unless she became a bigger label; and that wasn't the original plan. So it was shit or get off the pot, and they closed the label down. It did what it was supposed to do: it put out genre defying records that sure enough lots of people liked. We proved our point: people aren't as narrowminded as everybody thinks they are. We showcased at Mutek and Sonar, played a bunch of shows together and generally had a good time considering ourselves as Orthlorngs.

from hidden corners and crevices, microbes of the musical world emerge. beautiful in their sometimes intricate design, sometimes violent simplicity, they are reactions to/parasites of the strivingly antiseptic world that surrounds them. jewels of neglect, they glisten in the hands of the curious, who become unsuspecting hosts for these sounds and the prickly aesthetics they bring with them. these ideas, noises, musorks have picked us to manifest their need to be heard. we have no choice but to share them with you through orthlorng musork, a voice for the uncommon which is far too often swept aside.

I am timeblind on myspace. thanks for the add.

I am crucialfelix on del.icio.us which is where I link to all the interesting shit I come across.

I put my photos up on flickr

NYC events iCal : anything that looks good.

Berlin events (parties, shows, vernissage, films): subscribe to google calendar / iCal

When I listen to music at home it all gets echoed onto here and on my Last.fm page. Most of the time I don't use that cause I don't want you to see me obsessively listening to my own mixes, really bad working titles.

You can read some posts I thought were interesting from various feeds.

I've been doing the Dance Music Business Resource since 1995, back when it was on hyperreal.org. Articles and info for artists and small labels. Recently I've been posting interesting industry news items and adding some new content about downloads etc.
