kode9 drops timeblind on rinse FM

May 4, 2006, 2:21 pm

ooh and he gets a reload while long slow mixing it with roll deep ( i told you that older roll deep stuff drives me mad ). so he decides to just play both tracks from the top.

Some of you understood that. Of course some have no clue what I'm on about. I went to the M_nus party this weekend (in a nuclear bunker) and I was talking with Richie Hawtin the plastiKman (he put out my very first 12" on Probe back in uh..... 1993 ? )

So I was bringing him up to date about my new dubstep/instrumental-grime things. I love talking to techno people about grime. He joked that I should do more slow funky tracks at 105 bpm and use that old MC202. Fuck, I don't remember the 202 but I guess I used to have one. He remembered. Then I said "Ok, but I wanna put Beenie Man on the track." "Who's Beenie Man?"
?????
Is it possible ?? Maybe he didn't hear me. Now I don't think Beenie knows who Richie is. But Beenie is huge, right ? King of the Dancehall, dropping innovation and anthems since 10 years now. Top 10 hits in the US. Or do we all live in our own little bubbles ?

Now the PlastiCman (the british grime chappy) has taken a bit of shit because he didn't even know there WAS already a guy called plastiKman. Now he's been forced to change his name to Plastician. OK let's assume nothing here — dear reader, plastiKman is a major legend in the techno world. You would think that would translate outside of the techno world. Perhaps not.

Enough about these people. Let's get back to talking about me.

When Kode9 was here in Berlin he played Ontological Ground of Being from my shortly to be released Ghostification EP.

Rinse FM is "London's most notorious, high-profile pirate station, running now for over ten years". Its the epicenter of Grime. (its an unlicensed radio station)
Great fanboy blog with photos here: http://www.woebot.com/2005/06/woebot_and_heronbone_at_rinse.html

London pirates are where jungle and grime really got created. Right now its doing well as a download culture too. I love it when people cut out 2 minutes from a live pirate set and it gets uploaded into the p2p scene (peer to peer - Soulseek, Gnutella, Limewire etc). Instant Single (archaic release format of the 20Century) soaked with late night atmosphere(you can hear the weed).

Whilst caning my track on said pirate, somebody calls his mobile, he deliberately misses the call. This is a signal to do a reload. Without incurring phone charges.

(come on I can't tell you everything.... ok a reload is the really annoying thing when they grab the record and wind it backwards in a huge clatter and then everybody yells and jumps around. then they play it from the top. my favorite reload of all time was on a chicago radio station; the dj was playing a sweet reggae lover's rock tune, swooped it up and said "dat was so nice i got to play it twice" and plopped it lovingly back to the start. my least favorite reload of all time was in 1998 back when every jungle track had the most annoying 2 minute long intros of boredom. finally the last frickin dolphin faded out into the void and the amens came crashing hard. total bliss. "rewind !!!" fuck. another 2 minutes of boredom. i hate rewinds.)

Kode is way smart and a decent people, does killer tracks himself and runs a label. The Burial album is coming soon on it. Sounds like: Rhythm & Sound + autechre doing garage beats; huge spaces to plop yr brain down into.

Links and things

I am timeblind on myspace. thanks for the add.

I am crucialfelix on del.icio.us which is where I link to all the interesting shit I come across.

I put my photos up on flickr

NYC events iCal : anything that looks good.

Berlin events (parties, shows, vernissage, films): subscribe to google calendar / iCal

When I listen to music at home it all gets echoed onto here and on my Last.fm page. Most of the time I don't use that cause I don't want you to see me obsessively listening to my own mixes, really bad working titles.

You can read some posts I thought were interesting from various feeds.

I've been doing the Dance Music Business Resource since 1995, back when it was on hyperreal.org. Articles and info for artists and small labels. Recently I've been posting interesting industry news items and adding some new content about downloads etc.
